The Pointer Sisters - So Excited and So Savvy
By Paul Ciulla
The Pointer Sisters recently returned to the studio to recreate
their signature tunes. "The Pointer Sisters - Favorites"
is a brand new recording of ten chart toppers, including: "I'm
So Excited", "Automatic", "Fire" and
"Jump (for my love)". More than two decades after these
songs became smash hits, Ruth Pointer Sayles and Anita Pointer
decided to jump back in to the studio to re-record them - and
they have their reasons!
They've always been trend-setters, never followers, but if
Ruth and Anita were ever going to decide to follow a trend, then
this would be the one. The concept of musicians re-recording
their hits is not a new one. The Pointer Sisters are joining
the likes of bands like Aerosmith, Simply Red, Foreigner, Twisted
Sister and Prince. In a time when pop hits have replaced jingles
or musical scores as the backdrop for commercials and TV shows,
entering the studio to re-record their back catalog empowers
them to be more selective about where these songs end up and
how much they charge for them.
The Pointers did it right and took the time to track down
many of the original artists who worked with them in the studio
the first time around, including bassist and producer Nathan
East. East is one of the most respected bassists in the industry
and is best known for his work with Eric Clapton.
Ruth and Anita were also able to recapture the panache of
their younger selves, which is no easy task for many artists.
More importantly, the songs on this disc have stood the test
of time and will be sure to excite fans all over again!
