ISSA

Issa Pointer was born Issa Kuren Edwards Pointer to parents Ruth Pointer and Dennis Edwards on January 22, 1978. The 3rd child for Ruth and second for Dennis. Issa was a happy baby and even as an infant showed signs of musical talent. At age 5 Issa performed for the Marin City church of God in the Easter service singing Amazing Grace for the entire congregation. Throughout her childhood Issa participated in many school plays and holiday shows; often having a solo part in the act.

Issa frequently joined her mother and aunts on stage during their performances; singing and dancing like a pro. At the tender age of 12, Issa made her recording debut on a Pointer Sisters album called Right Rhythm (Motown). She performed a French rap on a tune called "Billy Said Yes" with her mother on lead vocal. Just a few years later in 1993, she appeared on another Pointer Sisters' album called Only Sisters Can Do That (SBK). For this album she recorded background vocals on "Feel For The Physical", with her aunt June on lead vocal.

Through the years she continued to perform at school functions and other local events. Issa sang the national anthem many times for her high school basketball games, giving professional quality performances at age 16. At her high school graduation ceremony, Issa sang "The Greatest Love of All". This was her last performance before heading to college. Surprisingly, she decided to major in Criminal Justice instead of music. While at University of Massachusetts - Lowell Issa sang in various school events and though music was not her main focus, she could not get it out of her mind. After making some poor adolescent decisions, Issa decided to drop out of school after only 5 semesters and work. She moved around a lot and worked many different jobs trying to find herself, but she could never seem to find the right job. A few years would go by before Issa would rediscover that her true passion would always be music.

In August of 2002, Issa moved to Napa, CA to stay with a girlfriend. She was out of work, out of money and out of ideas. The phone rang and it was her mother calling to offer her a job. The Pointer Sisters had been invited to participate in an exceptional event in Europe called Night of the Proms and due to unfortunate events June would not be able to attend. Issa jumped at the opportunity. Here was her chance to show the world what she was born to do, SING. The tour was a success, and the collaboration of the old Pointer Sister sound with the new sound of yet another talented Pointer generation was a perfect fit. For the last 4 years Issa has been a constantly evolving figure in the Pointer Sisters trio. Her energy and freshness bring something new to the group. While she will never replace the legend of her aunt June, she is holding her own in the big shoes she has stepped into. The product of 2 incredible talents, Issa has proven to be a welcome addition to The Pointer Sisters and will soon prove to be an incredible performer in her own right.
